Queens Park Rangers’ goalkeeper Liam Kelly has started the last six games in goal for Mark Warburton’s side, and looks set to be the number one for the remainder of the season.

With QPR (still) searching for their first clean sheet of the season, Warburton made a bold selection call when he dropped Joe Lumley for Kelly last month.

Lumley had played in QPR’s opening 9 matches where they’d conceded 17 goals, and in Kelly’s six of the season he’s conceded 14.

The Scot signed in the summer from Livingston as back-up to Lumley. He was set for a season on the bench but unexpectedly to him, he’s found himself a regular in Warburton’s team.

Though he looked a touch nervy in his first few games, Warburton persisted with him and in the last few games, Kelly has made some fine saves and is looking to grow in confidence with each passing fixture.

Against Leeds last weekend, QPR lost 2-0. Despite the loss though, Kelly and his defence out in their best display for a long time, particularly in the first-half where Kelly and co were passing the ball around the back with ease.

The 23-year-old keeper can probably rest easy now knowing that his starting spot is pretty much secured, at least up until the New Year.

He can take confidence from the fact that his performances have improved every weekend, and that he’s starting to look more at home in the Championship.

Making the switch from Scottish football into English will have been tough for Kelly, who’s still classed as one of Warburton’s younger players don’t forget.

Lumley is a top keeper and for Kelly to dismantle him after such a short time shows how highly he’s regarded by his manager, and that too should give Kelly great confidence.

For Kelly and QPR this season, the goal should just be to settle under the new boss and see where they can go.

Promotion this season would probably come a year too early for QPR, but that’s no reason to stop them from pushing for a top-six spot nonetheless - if Kelly keeps improving how he has done, he’ll prove a fine addition come May.
