The Football League came back into our lives at the weekend as teams up and down the country fought to get their season off to a good start.
One team who did just that is Preston North End.
The side from Lancashire were taken over by manager Alex Neil in the summer and despite the Whites having a strong squad filled with talented young players, they have been backed for relegation by many.
As a Preston fan myself I knew this was never going to be a possibility but if anybody needed to be proven wrong, they probably were this weekend.
North End put in an excellent shift against promotion hopefuls Sheffield Wednesday in a match which was won 1-0 by Neil’s men.
There were outstanding performances all over the pitch but the one I especially want to talk about is Daniel Johnson’s.
When Johnson arrived at the club in League One, he looked an incredible talent.
He was sharp, tricky and to be honest looked far too good for the division.
But last season, those performances that we got so used to seeing seemed to stop.
He became somewhat lazy and a shadow of the player we knew he was capable of being.
Under Alex Neil he seems to have put that all behind him as the manager’s style of play looks to suit Johnson to a tee.
It allows the former Villa man to spend much more time on the ball, gliding through the midfield and expertly finding forward passes.
His goal at the weekend was fully deserved and if his performance is anything to go by, he could be a key man in Preston’s campaign this time around.
