Wayne Rooney has confirmed that Tom Lawrence will be Derby County's captain ahead of the 2021/22 season.

Lawrence has been a key player for Derby in his four years at Pride Park, racking up 146 appearances since joining in the summer of 2017.

The Wales international scored 10 goals in 37 games in 2019/20, but last season, he made only 23 appearances and scored three goals in a season which was affected by injury.

But as Derby prepare for the new season under Wayne Rooney, the manager has confirmed that Lawrence will be his new captain going forward.

It has been a rocky time at Pride Park for Lawrence, who was embroiled in huge controversy in 2019/20 when he was involved in an alcohol-related road accident with Richard Keogh and Mason Bennett.

But the winger has looked to make amends since, and his performances on the pitch have often been impressive in a black and white shirt.

Being named as the club's new captain suggests that Lawrence has gone a long way in making up for previous mistakes, and calls it a "privilege" to be named as the new skipper.
