With Steve Bruce now confirmed as the new manager at Hillsborough, the challenge to secure their Championship status and then push on to challenge for promotion is top of the list for the new Owls chief.

Wednesday actually enjoyed a fairly successful Christmas period but Bruce will be under no doubt of the task ahead of him with recruitment in the January window a priority.

The need for goals is obvious and Bruce could do worse than consider Shane Long at Southampton, who has struggled for first team chances this season.

So should the Owls make a move for Long this January?

We discuss.....

Louie Chandler

If they can get him then yes.

Long's experience could be a big difference maker in turning Wednesday's season from a mess into a relative success.

I do think they have bigger problem areas than in attack, however.

George Dagless

This might not be a bad idea.

He's not scoring goals in the Premier League but could be a threat in the Championship.

He has pace and experience and Steve Bruce knows him well - it might be worth considering.

Gary Hutchinson

They can’t afford him.

If they could sort out a loan then yes, absolutely.

Fletcher and Nuhiu, with respect, will not fire you up the Championship.

Long might.

Alfie Burns

A striker should be high on Bruce’s agenda and Long would be an exceptional signing.

However, if he’s willing to take the step down into the Championship, clubs higher in the table might show an interest.

That’s where Bruce would have to use his pull.
