Aston Villa

This midfielder is the key to Villa’s recent unbeaten run

Aston Villa are unbeaten in the last eight league matches Conor Hourihane has played in and that is no coincidence.

It was the former Barnsley man who got Villa’s stuttering campaign off the ground with a hat-trick in a 4-2 home win over Norwich back in August.

The midfielder has also played every single minute of Villa’s current four match winning streak, which started with a comprehensive 3-0 win at the home of his former club.

Villa added lots of experience to their ranks in the shape of John Terry and Glenn Whelan over the summer but they also need to marry that with young legs who are hungry to prove themselves if they are to achieve anything of note this season.

Hourihane was one of the standout performers in the league during his time at Oakwell and his blend of tenacity, legs and technical ability is exactly what Villa need if they are to live up to expectations this season.

Whelan will need that energy alongside him if he is to make an impact in this league, but the Irish partnership look to have all the hallmarks of a pairing that can take Steve Bruce to where he wants to go.

Young guns Keinan Davis and Josh Onomah also provide that energy, but need experience to guide them – Hourihane provides the natural blend between the two.

He adds another dimension to the Villa ranks and Bruce will be praying that he stays fit – he will need him if Villa are to continue this upward curve.
