After experiencing playoff heartbreak at the end of the 2016/17 season, losing to Blackpool in the semi-finals, John Still and Luton Town were more eager than ever to get promotion in the next campaign.

The Hatters finished fourth that season and only narrowly missed out on an automatic promotion spot, but the objective for the summer now was to build a team so strong that it could not possibly fall short of the top three.

In total, 13 new faces arrived over the summer including the likes of Marek Stech, Andrew Shinnie, Elliot Lee and Luke Berry.

But it was the signing of a striker that appeared to excite the fans the most.

This is FLW Rewind where we take a look back at an iconic decision made by a club, analyse the initial response and document what happened next.

The signing in question was Crawley Town striker James Collins.

He arrived at Kenilworth Road having just scored 20 League Two goals in the previous season and was recruited to provide the firepower needed for promotion.

The fans were very excited with the signing as well:

And they were right to be excited.

Collins could not have got off to a better start, scoring a hat-trick against Yeovil Town on the opening day of the League Two season as the hatters romped to a ridiculous 8-2 victory.

The goals just kept on coming and despite not scoring in the last five matches of the season, the Hatters were promoted after finishing second in the League Two table

He formed a dynamic partnership with fellow striker Danny Hylton and the pair scored 40 goals between them in the league, with Collins bagging 19.
