Wigan Athletic manager Paul Cook will be licking his wounds this morning, following his side's weekend defeat to Championship basement team Ipswich Town.

The result leaves Cook's side six points above the drop-zone and 11 points off the play-offs, so the manager will know he needs some new faces to freshen up his squad, with Cardiff outcast Gary Madine a possible target according to the Sun on Sunday (16 December, Page 59).

But would the 28-year-old striker be a good addition to the Wigan squad?

We discuss.....

A more direct approach could be on the cards for Wigan if they manage to get Gary Madine.

Wigan have a solid line-up for strikers, but they are all similar in size, stature and ability – so there is not another option or another way of playing when things need to be changed.

Adding Madine could be the player to allow them to switch things up if needed.

His scoring record isn’t great, but it’s what he brings to the team which could be vital for Wigan if he does indeed move there.

Gary Hutchinson

Sure, Madine did well with Bolton and then blotted his copybook with a foolish move to Cardiff. He’s not had a look in since, but he’s a good Championship player.

He’s nasty, uncompromising and can put the ball in the net, arguably what you need at this level.

This makes complete sense.

Alfie Burns

It’s exactly the type of deal Wigan should be looking to do.

Madine is a powerful player who would bring a real presence at the top of the field for the Latics.

If Paul Cook can get him on board, Madine would bring the best out of those around him.
