Portsmouth have signed Barnsley midfielder Cameron McGeehan on loan for the rest of the season.

The 24-year-old played a key role in the Tykes promotion from League One last season but has seen his playtime greatly reduced in the 2019/20 campaign.

McGeehan appeared to fall out of favour completely following the arrival of Gerhard Struber, made the switch to Pompey until the end of the season.

Blues boss Kenny Jackett told the club website: "We’re delighted to sign Cameron. He’s still young, but has a lot of experience."

So, is the midfielder's addition a good move by the League One side?

We discuss...

Dean Cooke

"This is an absolutely brilliant signing from Portsmouth especially at League One level, and he's a player that could play a big part in Pompey's chances of getting into the Championship.

"He's got so much ability and is excellent on the ball. It shows how highly Barnsley rate him that they've only sent him on loan to the club but they obviously need him match fit after recovering from his leg break.

"With Kenny Jackett's side pushing for the play-offs, they're going to need all the help they can get in the middle of the park and McGeehan in plain and simple terms is an upgrade on their current midfielders–if they can get him fit.

"At just 24-years-old, there is still so much potential for McGeehan to give, and who knows, if Portsmouth go up and Barnsley go down, it may well be made permanent if successful."

Ned Holmes

"This looks like a fantastic signing to me and the sort of move that should give their late-season promotion push a huge boost.

"The 24-year-old was integral for Barnsley last season, making 39 appearances and helping them to finish second in League One.

"He is a dynamic midfielder with a lot of experience and someone that, to be honest, could be playing at a higher level. The fact that he got promoted with Barnsley last season is an added bonus for Jackett.

"McGeehan will likely be very motivated to prove Barnsley they were wrong not to utilise him and to turn some heads prior to the summer."

Ben Lang

"This looks set to be a great addition for Portsmouth as they step up their play-off push in the second half of the season, particularly seeing as McGeehan was an important player for Barnsley in their promotion last term.

"The midfielder may not be best suited to Struber's plans at Barnsley but he looks set to be a good fit for Jackett's side given his industry in the centre of the park.

"The 24-year-old can operate in a number of midfield roles but it seems likely he will play in the number 10 position for the south-coast side and he will also add a much-needed extra option for the second half of the season.

"McGeehan should also benefit massively from the move seeing as he has not been playing regular football recently, while he has not looked at his best when he has played, which means he may be better suited to League One."
