After Newcastle United's disappointing relegation from the top flight last year, it was clear that nothing less than promotion straight back to the top flight was acceptable.

Champions League winning manager Rafa Benitez has got the team firing and has led them to a near perfect start to this season, the club currently sit top of the table, after picking up 10 wins from the opening 14 league games.

Newcastle's closest challengers are Brighton and Huddersfield who sit 2nd and 3rd respectively, just three points behind the Magpies.

Newcastle have blown teams away so far this year and have scored a remarkable 30 goals in 14 games, currently giving them a goal difference of +19, something which could be very handy come the end of the season.

This article is going to take a look at the ultimate Newcastle United five-a-side-team from this current crop of players....

Karl Darlow

26-year-old Karl Darlow would get the nod in between the sticks in my Newcastle United five-a-side team.

Darlow has been in and out of the Newcaslte United starting eleven so far this season, but after some underwhelming performances by summer signing Matz Sels, he now has his chance to make the number one jersey his own.

Darlow is an experienced goalkeeper at Championship level as he made over 100 appearances for Nottingham Forest at this level.

Darlow was limited to just 10 appearances last season as the Magpies slumped to a disappointing relegation, and he will now be aiming to secure his status as the clubs number one goalkeeper.

Jamaal Lascelles

Young centre back Jamaal Lascelles has been thriving so far this season in the role of captain, and would therefore make his way into my ultimate Newcastle United five-a-side-team as the leader in defence.

Despite being just 22 year of age, Lascelles has displayed composure and leadership that is way beyond his years.

He is touted to be a leading Premier League defender in the future and his potential has been recognised at international level by England, for whom he has been capped at under 18, 19, 20 and 21 level.

Vurnon Anita

Workaholic Vurnon Anita is a huge fans favourite down at St James Park due to his work ethic and passion for the club.

Anita would be an essential cog in any Newcastle United five-a-side-team as he is he is very quick at covering ground, has bite in the tackle and is deceptively strong despite his size.

Anita has been at the club since 2012 and has gone onto make over 100 appearances for the Magpies, throughout that time he has shown his versatility and played in a number of positions, something that makes him such an asset to the Newcastle United squad.

Jonjo Shelvey

England international Jonjo Shelvey is one of the vocal points in this current Newcastle United side, and would therefore make his way into my ultimate five-a-side team.

Shelvey has excellent technical ability, great vision and also a keen eye for goal.

The former Liverpool man came down with the club from the top flight last season and has already proved this season that he is a class above Championship level, Shelvey has bossed the midfield of almost each and every game he has played in so far this year, bullying his fellow Championship midfielders, with his sheer physicality and know how.

Dwight Gayle

Dwight Gayle has been in incredible form so far this year, and would spearhead the attack of my Newcastle United five-a-side team.

The former Crystal Palace man has netted a remarkable 11 goals in 14 league games so far, as he begins to pay back the hefty fee that the club paid to bring him to St James Park in the summer.

Gayle is an old fashioned goal poacher, he feeds off any scraps in the penalty area and more often than not puts them in the back of the net with a calm, clinical and precise finish.

The 26-year-old frontman is a real asset to the club in the Championship, and will be looking to fire the club straight back up to the Premier League at the first time of asking.
