An interesting update on the future of Kemar Roofe has been provided, with Leeds United prepared to play the waiting game over extending the forward’s deal.

Leeds’ promotion push has been spearheaded by Roofe, with the 25-year-old scoring seven goals already this season.

Speaking on the Inside Elland Road podcast, Phil Hay has provided an update on Roofe’s contract situation, with his current deal set to run out in 2020.

There have been murmurings of Premier League interest, but Leeds appear prepared to wait three or four months before agreeing an extension.

Just how risky is this?

We discuss…

Louie Chandler

It is a risk, but I think they can afford it.

Roofe seems to be enjoying his time at Leeds and if the club are promoted there is no way he won't sign a new deal.

No reason to panic here.

Chris Gallagher

This is insane from Leeds.

Why would they let Roofe's contract run down when they know there will be interest in the player?

The longer it goes, the more likely he is to leave. His form warrants a new deal and he is a key player under Marcelo Bielsa.

They need to act quickly.

Alfie Burns

I can see why Leeds might wait and see if Roofe’s form continues into the New Year, but it still comes as a surprise that the club are prepared to take this risk.

The 25-year-old has been exceptional this season and he deserves an improved contract.

The game Leeds are playing could encourage a lot of interest from the Premier League.
