Sunderland look set to make a play for Bournemouth's exciting young striker Sam Surridge after he enjoyed two successful loan spells in League Two, as reported by the Northern Echo.

The forward spent last season with Yeovil, but caught they eye at the beginning of this campaign with displays for Oldham Athletic.

That loan deal ended this January and he's now a target for Jack Ross, who wants to replace Josh Maja.

The 19-year-old moved to Bordeaux last week and has left room for a new forward to come in.

Sunderland have been in pursuit of Will Grigg, but having also lost Jerome Sinclair this window leaving plenty of room for new faces to come in. The Black Cats are currently fifth in League One and embroiled in one of the most exciting automatic promotion hunts in recent seasons.

Will Surridge be the man to help give them the edge this season? or is it a big step up to make, going from mid table Oldham to a huge club like Sunderland? Our FLW panel discusses.

George Harbey

"There’s bound to be some question marks raised about this move.

"Surridge has been on fire in League Two this season, and is a very similar player to Maja in terms of his playing style.

"Can he make the step up to League One however? It’ll be a big test for the forward."

Louie Chandler

"It's a bit more shrewd but still a good signing.

"I still think that Sunderland should go all out for Will Grigg but bringing in Surridge for a bit of depth is also a great idea.

"He has a great record in League Two and would be a wise investment from the Black Cats."

Jay Taylor

“This is good business.

“Surridge is a player I have rated myself for a while and getting the chance to move to Sunderland will be a big deal.

“He will add so much to this current Black Cats’ side and will be a different option to what they have as they look to get back to the Championship.”
