The Reading board have seen enough and parted company with their manager Jose Gomes after only 10 months in charge at the Madejski Stadium, with the Royals in 22nd place in the Championship.

With many names being linked with the post, one name that may come into consideration is recently sacked manager of Barnsley, Daniel Stendel, who was relived of his duties earlier in the week at Oakwell.

So should the Royals consider Stendel for their managerial vacancy?

We discuss.......

Sam Rourke

"This is an interesting one, but it's not the right fit.

"Ultimately Reading need their next manager to be someone with Championship nous and experience, and knows what it takes to first of all survive in the division, and proceed to push up the league.

"Stendel is a passionate character and worked wonders in League One with Barnsley last season, but he failed to translate that success into the Championship, with the Tykes sturggling early doors, albeit there were several factors out of the German's control.

"The Royals need stability, and employing someone like Stendel who doesn't have an abundance of Championship experience must be viewed as a gamble.

Louie Chandler

"This has got to be the best available option.

"Stendel's big problem at Barnsley this summer was that he was not backed adequately by the board and was stripped of his main assets.

"Reading have a strong squad that would be perfectly suited to Stendel's fluid style of play.

"It brings a few more risks than other appointments might, but I think this would be a seriously good appointment for the Royals."

Ben Lang

"Definitely. He worked wonders at Barnsley last season and this is a move that would demonstrate the Reading hierarchy have some kind of long-term vision for the club.

"Stendel might not have been able to carry Barnsley's form into this season, but he could not help that the club sold a number of its key players over the summer and still expected the squad to compete at a high level in the Championship.

"The German might take some time to settle into his role at the Madejski Stadium, but this appointment would have similarities to Gomes' arrival at the club last season. It's a forward-thinking appointment of a manager who also has the tactical awareness to achieve success in the short term.

"Reading could also be a great move for Stendel. He would likely earn a pay rise and he would have a strong squad at his disposal, but the Reading board must also back him in January to bring in the players he wants."
