According to reports from London News Online, Charlton Athletic are interested in signing goalkeeper Ben Amos on a free transfer.

The former Manchester United youngster spent last season on loan with fellow Championship side Millwall, making just 12 league appearances for the Lions having played behind David Martin in the pecking order at The Den.

But the 29-year-old now finds himself looking for a new club, having been released by parent club Bolton Wanderers following the expiry of his contract at the University of Bolton Stadium.

Fresh after signing a new deal with Charlton, though, manager Lee Bowyer has confirmed that he is interested in signing Amos this summer, saying: "Ben is one of the ones we are trying to work on - but he was on a hell of a lot of money, so it’s just whether he is prepared to go down to what we are going to offer."

“We’re just trying to persuade him – he did a great job for us before."

Amos is certainly no stranger to The Valley, having spent the entirety of the 2017/18 campaign on loan with the Addicks, where he made 50 appearances in all competitions and helped them reach the play-off semi-finals.

Here, we discuss whether Amos would be a good signing for the Addicks...

Gary Hutchinson

"This is an interesting one. Amos is a good keeper and would be a more than adequate number one in the Championship.

"It’s harsh on Phillips though, isn’t it? He was left out at the beginning of last season as Jed Steer stepped up to claim the shirt.

"When Steer left, Phillips kept loanee Chris Maxwell out of the side.

"Amos wouldn’t be going to the Valley to sit on the bench, so it’s bad news for Phillips."

Jacob Potter

"There are better options out there for the Addicks.

"Amos wasn't anywhere near his best for Millwall last season, and I'm not sure he'd be a regular starter for Charlton if he was to sign for them.

"He kept just one league clean sheet, which doesn't make for good reading at all.

"Is he much of an upgrade on Dillon Phillips? I think not."

George Harbey

"I'm torn on this one, as on his day, Amos has the potential to be a very good goalkeeper.

"He was hugely impressive for the Addicks in his previous loan spell at The Valley, and probably just needs an arm around his shoulder having been frozen out at both Millwall and Charlton.

"They do need another goalkeeper, but it would be harsh to leave Phillips out of the team given the season he has just had for Bowyer's side."
