Wigan Athletic are interested in a loan move for Liverpool forward Ben Woodburn, Goal have reported.
Woodburn has made just 11 senior appearances for Liverpool in all competitions, and spent the first half of last season on loan at Sheffield United, although he was recalled to Merseyside around the turn of the year after making just eight appearances for The Blades.
Liverpool however are said to be open to Woodburn heading out on loan again next season, with Wigan reportedly interested in bringing Woodburn – who has two goals in ten senior appearances for Wales – to The DW Stadium.
So would Woodburn be a good signing for Wigan?
We asked some of our Football League World writers for their opinions.
“Woodburn is an exciting player and he could be a good signing for Wigan.
“He’s obviously got a lot of potential and even though his loan spell at Sheffield United last season was disappointing, he should still be able to make an impact in the Championship next season.
“Wigan could do with some more firepower up front and Woodburn could be a great signing.”
“This is an interesting one.
“There is no doubting that Woodburn has potential, something that he seems to have shown more for country than club, but the fact that he struggled to get many opportunities at Sheffield United may be a concern.
“The imminent departure of Nick Powell and expiration of Leon Clarke’s loan mean that Wigan are in need of more attacking options for next season, so bringing in someone with that attacking spark such as Woodburn may not be a bad idea.”
“I’m not so sure about this signing.
“Woodburn failed to make his opportunity count when he signed for Sheffield United on loan last season, and just didn’t look like making an impact at all.
“He deserves another chance to impress in the second tier, but I think there are better options out there for the Latics.”
