Blackburn Rovers manager Tony Mowbray has acted following David Raya’s departure for Brentford, with the arrival of Brighton goalkeeper Christian Walton to Ewood Park on a season-long loan, according to Sky Sports News.
Walton, 23, had a number of spells out on loan with the last two seasons at Wigan, where he helped them win the Sky Bet League One title during his first campaign at the DW Stadium.
So will Walton prove a good signing for Rovers?
“This is a great signing for Rovers.
“They needed a keeper after losing David Raya to Brentford and they have managed to bring in a very exciting stopper who is only improving.
“He handled the step up to the Championship with Wigan relatively easily last season for his first year in the second-tier and is a solid option at this level.
“The recruitment team at Ewood Park deserve a lot of credit for sorting this deal pretty quickly after Raya’s departure and it is a coup for them when you consider there was a lot of interest in Walton.
“As for the keeper, he will get more game time next season which wouldn’t have happened at Brighton, so it’s a deal that suits all parties. ”
“I think this is a good signing for Blackburn.
“Walton is a very talented goalkeeper and Brighton obviously rate him highly for the future, otherwise they would have sold him this summer.
“The fact that there was interest in him from several clubs speaks volumes about his quality and potential.
“He already has some experience in the Championship with Wigan Athletic and was magnificent for the Latics in League One in 2017/18.
“Blackburn could do with a new goalkeeper this summer with David Raya having left Ewood Park on join Brentford and Walton could be an ideal replacement.
“Rovers are also rumoured to be interested in Scott Carson from Derby, but I actually think Walton is a better signing and as it is a loan deal, it would be a much more cost-effective move.”
“This is an interesting one. Walton is a highly-rated goalkeeper, but I’m not sure he’s exactly what Blackburn need at this moment.
“Rovers sold stopper David Raya to Brentford earlier this summer which means they needed to be in the market for a goalkeeper, but I do think they should have looked at someone with more experience than Walton.
“It may be the case that they are still looking to sign another ‘keeper, in which case I’m not sure it’s the right move for Walton to have joined. He needs to be playing regular senior football if he wants to oust Mat Ryan from between the sticks with the Seagulls.
“Something just doesn’t quite add up for me, but I’m sure Rovers will still benefit from Walton’s presence at the club next term. There is no harm in making the signing if it can be afforded, as Walton is clearly a talented goalkeeper with plenty of potential to succeed in the game.”
