According to reports from TEAMtalk, Leeds United are among a host of clubs interested in signing Coventry City midfielder Zain Westbrooke.

The 23-year-old - who signed for Coventry on a free transfer from Brentford in the summer - has made 25 appearances in all competitions for the Sky Blues this season.

The dynamic midfielder has played an influential role in helping Mark Robins' side climb to within touching distance of the automatic promotion places in League One, scoring four goals and adding two assists.

But a host of high-profile clubs are now said to be interested in signing the midfielder, with Leeds United joining West Brom and Nottingham Forest in the transfer race.

The Whites look on course to make a long-awaited return to the Premier League this season, with Marcelo Bielsa seemingly keen to add long-term quality to his squad.

Here, then, we discuss whether Westbrooke would be a good signing for Leeds...

Josh Cole

“This could turn out to be an inspired signing by Leeds if they can beat the likes of West Brom and Bristol City to Westbrooke’s signature in the coming weeks.

“An integral part of Coventry’s success in League One this season, the midfielder has produced six direct goal contributions for his side which has helped them to climb up to third in the standings.

“Although the Whites are currently in a healthy position to secure promotion to the Premier League, they are relatively light in the heart of midfield at the moment due to injuries to Jamie Shackleton and Adam Forshaw and thus a move for Westbrooke may help to resolve this particular issue.

“Providing that the 23-year-old is able to make the correct adjustments to his game to cope with the competitiveness of the second-tier, he will have a fantastic chance of becoming a key player for Leeds in the not too distant future."

Jordan Rushworth

“Westbrooke is a player with real potential to develop into a well rounded midfielder capable of playing at a higher level than League One, and you could certainly see Marcelo Bielsa being able to bring the best out of him and improving him on the training ground.

“The 23-year-old offers the sort of technical quality in possession that is needed to play in Leeds’ midfield, and he also offers an ability to get forwards and contribute to the attacking third with his runs from the middle of the pitch.

“Leeds, though, have a fairly settled midfield and that would make it a challenge for Westbrooke to force his way into the starting line-up if he were to make the move to Elland Road, but he would certainly provide another quality option for Bielsa to call upon from the bench.

“It would be interesting to see whether Westbrooke would be able make the step up to the Championship, but given the form he has shown so far this campaign he would be a useful addition for the Whites to strengthen their midfield options this window.”

Chris Gallagher

"This is a tough one.

"I think Westbrooke's high energy style would work well under Marcelo Bielsa and they aren't exactly well-stocked for options in that department.

"So, I think the Coventry City man would be a good short-term option for the Whites however they need to be planning ahead. The way they are playing, combined with the nine-point lead over third place, means that promotion seems a real possibility and they should be aiming for players who can deliver in the Premier League.

"Westbrooke is unproven in the Championship, never mind the top-flight, so there's a fair argument to say the Whites should be aiming for a lot better.

"Although, for £2m it's a low-risk move and the 23-year-old could be a decent squad option to help the side over the line."

George Harbey

"I think that this a signing that would divide Leeds fans - on one hand, they will be excited about his potential, but they already have plenty of talented, young midfielders on their books that deserve a chance to shine.

"Not only would Westbrooke have to get into the team ahead of the likes of Mateusz Klich and Kalvin Phillips, but the likes of Robbie Gotts and Jamie Shackleton have all impressed under Marcelo Bielsa these past couple of years.

"There is no denying that he is a quality player who has loads of potential, and he would be the perfect box-to-box midfielder to suit Bielsa's system.

"But right now, if I were him, I'd stay at Coventry and look to help them win promotion, as he is currently playing under a manager who believes in him and gets the best out of him."
