Sunderland manager Phil Parkinson is making some last minute additions to his squad, with TEAMtalk reporting that the Black Cats have agreed a deal with Bristol City, to take striker Antoine Semenyo on-loan until the end of the current season.

London-born Semenyo, 20, is a product of the Robins' youth set-up and has made 14 appearances since signing senior terms at Ashton Gate in 2018, while also spending spells out on loan at Bath City and Newport County.

So will Semenyo be a good addition at the Stadium of Light, is he needed and can you see him starting regularly?

Kris Smith

“I think it’s a very solid signing for Sunderland and offers them something different to what they currently have in their squad, especially with outgoings potentially coming up front on deadline day.

“Having brought in Kyle Lafferty and starting Charlie Wyke at the moment, the Black Cats are usually operating with two similar types of forwards, so Semenyo would come in and offer a different dimension.

“Semenyo would come in to add depth to Phil Parkinson’s Sunderland side and add depth too as they look to push for promotion, which makes this a worthwhile signing in my book.

“I don’t think Semenyo will get regular starts, but he is certain to feature more than he has done for Bristol City so far this season, so it could be a good move for all parties.”

Phil Spencer

“This has the potential to be an excellent deal for Sunderland.

“The Black Cats have made no secret of their desire to bring in a striker this month and Semenyo ticks all of the boxes.

“Pace, power and an eye for goal – the Bristol City man has it all and could be massive for Sunderland’s hopes of securing promotion.

“He’s shown glimpses of what he can do in the Championship and the hope is that he’ll take League One by storm.

“He might face competition for his place from Charlie Wyke, but Semenyo will undoubtedly play a big role between now and the end of the season.”

Jacob Potter

“This is a smart bit of business by Sunderland if they can get the deal over the line before the deadline on Friday.

“Semenyo has experience of playing first team football with Bristol City having made 11 appearances for the Robins in all competitions this term.

“But he’s unlikely to be getting much game time in the second-half of this year’s campaign, especially when Nahki Wells is edging closer to a move to Lee Johnson’s side.

“It’ll only push Semenyo further down the pecking order in the Bristol City squad, and it’s good to see the club willing to loan him out for the remainder of the season.

“If Semenyo can hit the ground running with Sunderland, then it could be one of the smartest signings of the season in League One.

“The Black Cats could certainly benefit from having a striker that is eager to prove a point, and he could be the ideal player to challenge Charlie Wyke for his starting spot in Phil Parkinson’s side.

“He could be the missing piece in their promotion jigsaw.”
