Birmingham City confirmed their Championship status over the Easter weekend, with a 2-2 draw against Derby County and a 3-1 win over Rotherham United proving enough.

And with their safety now confirmed, Garry Monk can now start to look ahead to the opening of the transfer window.

He dropped a significant hint at his pre-match press conference on Thursday as well, revealing that he would like to keep on-loan duo Gary Gardner and Connor Mahoney at the club, according to the club's official Twitter account.

Gardner arrived at the club on a season-long loan from rivals Aston Villa back in the summer and has gone on to make 41 Championship appearances this season, scoring twice.

Winger Mahoney has made 32 appearances, scoring twice as well after making the move from Bournemouth during the summer transfer window.

So, would this be a smart move from Birmingham?

We discuss...

Ben Lang

"I think there are plenty of benefits to signing both of them.

"Gardner has had a huge impact on Birmingham's midfield, and Monk could really use with that continued stability in the centre.

"Mahoney is not yet the finished product, but he has good sell-on value. They just need to look at Che Adams' development to realise what could be possible with Mahoney in the future."

George Harbey

"I think it would be great business to keep both players.

"Gardner is bound to offer so much experience and character in the dressing room, whilst Mahoney, on his day, is a very good player.

"Birmingham’s squad is actually very decent, and Monk will be looking to keep the core of their squad ahead of next season."

Louie Chandler

"This is a no-brainer for Birmingham.

"Both Mahoney and Gardner have been consistent and reliable throughout the campaign, contributing massively to what has been an impressive season.

"With no embargo set to be enforced on them, Monk will be keen to strengthen his side but he should be wary of causing too much upheaval."
