On Monday, Reading announced that they had completed the signing of Brighton and Hove Albion striker Sam Baldock for an undisclosed fee.
The striker signed a three-year contract at the Madjeski and was also confirmed as the club’s new number nine for the upcoming season.
The Royals struggled massively for goals last season, so Paul Clement will be hopeful that the 29-year-old will be able to provide them this season.
Baldock spent last season playing for the Seagulls’ reserves in an injury hit campaign.
He first shot to prominence with MK Dons during the 2010/11 season where he scored 12 League One goals in 30 games which earned him a big money move to West Ham in the summer.
He has struggled to recapture that form since however.
After leaving West Ham he refound his scoring touch with Bristol City in League One, scoring 24 goals in their first season after relegation from the Championship.
So will he be a good signing for the Royals?
I worry about Reading, I’m not sure Baldock has ever been a 20-goal a season man which is what you need in the lower reaches of the division.
The fee is rising to £5m I hear which is about right for a striker at this level, but is Baldock going to score more than Mo Eisa or Jack Marriott? I doubt it.
Although he is fairly similar to Marc McNulty and I would have gone for a bigger striker instead, Baldock is a proven goal scorer at Championship level.
He will get the Royals at least 10 goals next season, which could prove to be the difference between a few league positions.
Baldock will have a point to prove after being frozen out by Brighton and Reading could benefit from that.
If he can regain his form of yesteryear then it is a quality signing.
Baldock knows the Championship and once he is warmed up, will bang in goals.
The only thing you worry about is the service to him, but he should still bag plenty this season.
This is a decent signing.
He hasn’t played much in the past 12 months but Baldock was crucial to Brighton’s promotion. If he can rediscover that form then he’s a smart signing but we shall see.
Some people were asking questions of this deal, which really surprised me.
I think Baldock will be a great addition to Reading’s side next season.
If he can find anything like his best, he will score plenty of goals.
