It took Ipswich until the 13th December to reach 20 goals in the 2016/17 season, a tally that Mick McCarthy's men have already accomplished by the end of September this time around, albeit reaching such a feat in the 3-1 home defeat to Bristol City on Saturday.

Assumptions that 'marquee-signing' Joe Garner was behind Town's upturn in goalscoring fortunes would probably be forgiven, when in fact the perhaps less revered summer incoming (also from Rangers), Martyn Waghorn, who scored in the defeat to the Robins, has been more of the catalyst for change.

The 27-year-old who didn't enjoy particularly fruitful spells in English football with Sunderland, Leicester, Wigan and Millwall, has notched an impressive 6 goals in 8 games.

A further three assists, including a sumptuous back-heel against his boyhood club Sunderland, which set up Bersant Celina to bundle home in the 5-2 demolition, has outlined the difference Waghorn has made to what has been a feeble Ipswich forward-line since the departure of Daryl Murphy at the beginning of last season.

After playing a starring role in the Rangers' revivial notably their promotion back to the SPL, Waghorn has injected a new lease of life into his previously stagnating career in England.

The striker certainly seems to have the hunger back and will be eager to prove himself an effective Championship forward and perhaps even above, having played a handful of games in the Premier League for Sunderland as a teenager.

The industrious Martyn Waghorn is already establishing himself as a fan's favourite as many of the Portman Road regulars will be drawing comparisons with their ex-talisman Daryl Murphy.
