It has been a demanding start to the season for Leeds United and their players who have played eight league games and three cup games.

Given the high intensity nature of the Championship, boss Thomas Christiansen has wisely chosen to rotate his squad for the Carabao Cup ties.

However, one man who has started every game so far is Luke Ayling.

This stat courtesy of Chris Taylor (@LUFCDATA) demonstrates how key the defender has been to The Whites great start.

Since joining from Bristol City for a fairly modest sum, Ayling has been nothing short of magnificent.

He was key to the improvements the side made under Garry Monk and is a pivotal player once again this year.

Leeds boast a very strong defensive record, conceding just three goals in their eight league games. Meanwhile, in the cup games, Ayling has slotted in as a centre-back with ease.

Fortunately for Christiansen, the defensive injuries are beginning to clear up, which may result in the fans favourite getting a well-earned break for the next cup tie.

The Verdict

When Leeds signed Luke Ayling, few fans probably realised the impact he would have on the team.

He has now established himself as a regular under two different managers and the fact he has featured in all Leeds games, which they've been winning, shows his importance.

There's a long season ahead and Leeds will need Ayling and the rest of the defence to keep up their high early season standards.
