Football League World’s Birmingham City fan pundit Alex Young has suggested that signing a new striker should be the club’s priority in January.

Last season's top-scorer Che Adams left to join Premier League side Southampton in the summer, while Isaac Vassell was sold to Cardiff City on transfer deadline day.

The Blues did sign Alvaro Gimenez from Almeria but he is yet to really find his feet and Pep Clotet’s side have been among the lowest scorers in the Championship so far.

Young highlighted the forward line as an area of concern and urged the club to bring new players in when the transfer market reopens at the turn of the year.

He said: “Birmingham should prioritise signing a striker in the January window.

“The loss of Adams to Southampton and Vassell to Cardiff has left the Blues short of options in that position, with no adequate replacement brought in over the summer.

“Gimenez was recruited, boasting the best goal tally in the Segunda Division last season, but we are yet to really see what he can offer on a consistent basis.

“He's certainly not a striker in the mould of Adams or Vassell, and their pace will be sorely missed as an attacking threat.”

Young explained that the club needed to add the sort of striker that would serve as an effective partner to Lukas Jutkiewicz, as Adams did last season.

He explained: “Jutkiewicz will remain ever-present in royal blue, leading the line, holding-up play and harassing defenders.

“His role cannot be understated, but for Birmingham, and Jutkiewicz, to really flourish as an attacking team, he needs a strike partnership with a pacey finisher.

"Indeed, he posted his best numbers last season, 14 goals and 10 assists, when regularly playing with Adams alongside him.

“While Birmingham's start to the season has been solid, it is imperative that a quick, hungry striker is top of the target list for January.”

Young suggested that the Birmingham club needed to take action in January to solve this problem.

He said: “As difficult as January transfers can be, this has to be the priority for the Blues' recruitment team.

“Players such as Nakhi Wells, Sean Maguire, perhaps even a move for a promising younger player such as Isaac Success or Michael Obafemi would fit the bill.

“Even if these players' records aren't as impressive as Adams', the form of Jutkiewicz and the foundation laid by his partnership with Adams in the previous season would give these players real scope to reach their potential.”

Clotet’s side are currently 11th in the Championship and face a trip to Pride Park to play Derby County on Saturday.
