Sheffield Wednesday manager Jos Luhukay is planning for the future after midfielder Matt Penney signed a new deal until the end of the 2019-20 campaign, as confirmed on the club website.

The 20-year-old who is product of the Wednesday academy system can play anywhere on the left side, having made his Owls debut in the Carabao Cup in August and has since made 12 Championship appearances.

So is a new contract for Penney good business for Wednesday?

We discuss.....

Gary Hutchinson

Yes, but it is only a year’s extension.

Unless you’re a League Two club, I think a year is a small amount to add on.

That might concern Wednesday fans, he wasn’t willing to put pen to paper for longer.

Jay Taylor

Very good news, this had to happen, it is important that Sheffield Wednesday tie down their young players with the most potential.

Joe Luhukay doing so gives younger players at the club looking to come through the ranks optimism that there is a path through for them.

With clubs sniffing around for Matt Penney, securing his long-term future is great business and immediately increases his worth.

Jacob Potter

It’ll probably prove to be their best signing this season.

Owls fans would have been disappointed to see their youngster depart from the club.

The new deal has secured Penney’s long term future at the club and he will be confident of retaining his place in Jos Luhukay’s starting XI at Sheffield Wednesday this season.
