Sheffield Wednesday are taking their time in this summer’s transfer window, with George Boyd currently the only new arrival heading into the 2017/18 Sky Bet Championship season.

Carlos Carvalhal appears to be searching for one or two high-profile arrivals as he looks to help the Owls back to the top-flight for the first time since 2000.

One area the Portuguese manager hopes to strengthen is central midfield, despite having a number of bodies already in that area.

Kieran Lee, Barry Bannan, Sam Hutchinson, Almen Abdi and David Jones hand Carvalhal competitive options, but between the five of them, they scored just nine goals in the Championship last season.

Five of those goals came from Lee, and it is argued that a handful more goals from that area to support the likes of Fernando Forestieri, Steven Fletcher and Jordan Rhodes, would see the Owls promoted.

One player the Owls have been linked with this summer is Jackson Irvine, and here at FLW, we believe that he could be the man to end the club’s long wait for a Premier League return, with his goalscoring record exceptional from midfield.

Last season for Burton Albion, Irvine made 41 appearances in the Championship, scoring ten crucial goals, which were ultimately vital to the club surviving relegation.

There is fierce competition for the 24-year-old’s signature, but should Carvalhal convince him to move to Hillsborough, he could be the missing link for Wednesday.

The Portuguese boss appears to be waiting for the right player this summer, and securing the service of Irvine, could help solve Wednesday’s goalscoring issues from midfield, giving them the extra edge in the race for promotion.
