Bolton Wanderers enjoyed a solid season in League One which proved enough for them to take the second automatic promotion spot in the division, and boss Phil Parkinson is preparing for life back in the Championship.

The former Bradford manager has released many names from his squad this summer ahead of the new campaign, with one of those midfielder Liam Trotter, who departs the coincidentally nicknamed Trotters after three years.

Interest will be rife in the 28-year-old, who has the ability to dominate the middle of the park in League One, and may even attract a little attention from sides in the second tier.

Offers will materialise for the player, but Rotherham should do what it takes to bring the player to south Yorkshire.

Fellow relegated side Blackburn are putting together an imposing midfield ahead of their League One campaign, having already added Richie Smallwood, Peter Whittingham, Ben Gladwin and Bradley Dack to their unit this summer.

If Rotherham are to compete with Rovers for an instant return to the Championship, then they must follow suit, and the addition of Trotter would go a long way in bolstering their squad for a promotion challenge.

The 6 ft 2 in ball winner has a lot to prove having been deemed surplus to requirement at the Macron by Parkinson, and achieving promotion with Rotherham to prove his former employers wrong would be a real motivational factor for the player.

Bringing Trotter in on a free would be an excellent move for the Millers, and boss Paul Warne should look to get the deal done.
