Rotherham Town have loaned forward Jerry Yates to Swindon Town on a season-long loan.

The 22-year-old spent half of last season on loan at Carlisle, scoring seven goals in 29 appearances, before returning to Rotherham and playing in seven more games.

Yates has played 46 games for Rotherham, starting 17 times and scoring five goals.

Manager at Swindon Town Richie Wellens was very pleased with his signing and was full of complements for the young man.

He told the club website: “I think Jerry’s got a little bit of everything – he’s got a good trick, he can score goals. He’s high energy and he’s infectious in the way that he plays, and I think other people will follow suit, and he’s hard working.

“He had a loan spell at Carlisle which was very good for him last year – he spent the first ten or twelve games playing wide left which is not his natural position but he showed great character and attitude just to get on with the job.”

Yates claimed that he knew he wanted to join the club as soon as he came to check it out.

“I was buzzing when I heard of the interest. I was delighted so I came down, met the Manager, saw the ground and was straight on the phone to my agent after saying: I wanted to go there because it’s going in the right direction," he said.

"I feel like the manager is the right man to help me progress and hopefully help the club progress so things are looking positive.”

The Verdict

I think it's good business by Swindon who will want to have a better go at going up next season.

Swindon had a bit of a goalscoring problem last year, and while Yates hasn't been prolific in this division, he has chipped in with goals.

I think with the right fit Yates could go on to score a lot of goals at this level. He was played a bit wider last season at Carlisle, and I think Wellens wants to play him more centrally, which could be a large part in him joining Swindon.
