Having settled into the role and completed the first phase of the plan by keeping the club in the Championship, Nottingham Forest manager Mark Warburton has taken charge of his first transfer window at the club with the intention of improving his squad to ensure another relegation scrap is well avoided.

Losing Britt Assombalonga this week will have been a blow to the former Brentford boss, but with £15 million coming in from the sale and plenty of weeks remaining in the transfer window, Warburton has time to build a squad capable of a mid table finish.

The latest man reported to be close to joining the Reds is Newcastle striker Daryl Murphy, who is available to move following the Magpies promotion to the Premier League.

Murphy was prolific during a three year spell with former club Ipswich, and scored 5 times in 14 league appearances during his year on Tyneside last season.

At the age of 34, the 6 ft 2 in forward is reaching the twilight years of his career, but still has plenty to offer to a Forest side aiming to shoot up the Championship table.

Murphy’s experience will be a welcome addition to a young Forest squad, and the guidance and instruction the well travelled forward can offer to the likes of Zach Clough and Ben Brereton could prove priceless in the development of the talented youngsters.

Although Murphy may not be the big name striker Forest fans may have hoped to see replace the departing Assombalonga, the player has a proven record at this level, and could prove to be a vital member of Warburton’s squad ahead of the new season.
