Birmingham City called upon Harry Redknapp to help them avoid relegation from the Championship last season.

The Blues were sinking fast under the stewardship of Gianfranco Zola, who departed with just three games of the season remaining having won just two league matches in charge of the club - a woeful run of form which saw them plunge into the heart of a relegation battle.

But 70-year-old Redknapp came in and led the side to two wins from his three games in charge to secure their second tier status for another season, and the former Tottenham boss then signed a one-year deal to lead the side into the 2017/18 campaign.

Yet many speculated that assurances in the transfer window must have played a part in Redknapp’s decision, and with the likes of David Stockdale and Marc Roberts joining the club over the summer, it appeared that those assurances were met.

However, things have gone a bit quiet on the transfer front in recent times, but one man they’ve been linked with is former Blackburn Rovers midfielder Jason Lowe.

The 25-year-old left Ewood Park at the expiration of his contract earlier this summer to bring the curtain down on a 14-year stay at the Lancashire-based club, in which time he played 196 matches, and scored just once.

And the Blues have been linked with a move for the Englishman, although Redknapp recently played down the speculation, stating: ‘I don’t know where that one has come from to be honest.’

Yet it could be a move worth pursuing for the Blues boss, as Lowe would bring a wealth of experience and another accomplished midfield option to an area that Redknapp has seemingly been looking to strengthen over the summer.

Lowe spent his whole career on the books at Blackburn until his release earlier this year, in which time he accumulated 140 Championship appearances for Rovers, and was a regular in the side from 2011 onwards (apart from when he sustained a foot injury in 2014).

And you cannot be a regular in the second tier, especially in the centre of midfield, if you don’t bring quality to the field, be it in terms of defensive contribution, or transferring the play from defence to attack - he was on trial at West Brom over the summer to underline how highly he is rated.

With the ability to play at right-back as well, the addition of Lowe would give Redknapp options in both the midfield and full-back areas, which are certainly needed over the course of a long, hard slog that is a Championship season.

And given it would be a free transfer as well, Birmingham have little to lose in landing Lowe, but much to gain if he can replicate his previous Blackburn form at St Andrew’s.
