After escaping relegation to League One last season, Nottingham Forest will be hoping to build a team capable of steering well away from the drop zone this summer.

It all came down to the final day for Blackburn Rovers, Birmingham City and Forest, all of whom could have been relegated and needed wins to help their cause for safety.

All three did actually managed victories, but it was Blackburn who suffered the drop as Birmingham beat Bristol City and Forest ran away with a 3-0 victory over Ipswich Town.

The nature over their win over the Tractor Boys has led to optimism at the City Ground, with many dreaming of a Huddersfield-esque run to the Premier League.

One addition they should be looking to make his Stewart Downing of Middlesbrough, who has been told he can leave the club on a free transfer this summer.

Without a fee to pay, the only stumbling block for the Tricky Trees would be his wages, however, it is likely he will have to compromise on his wage packet regardless, as the type of club he will end up leaving for simply won't be able to pay.

Downing played a significant part in Boro's promotion campaign during the 2015/16 season, starting 40 games and making five appearances off of the bench.

He scored three times and made five assists in that season, and has showed how good a player he can be at West Ham and Liverpool respectively in the Premier League.

This would be a seriously exciting signing for Forest and a quality addition to their attacking ranks.
