Wigan Athletic have had a season to forget, after finishing the campaign in 23rd position, the Latics have been relegated back to League One after just one season in English footballs second tier.
They began the season under the stewardship of Gary Caldwell, but after a run of poor results the board acted swiftly to relieve him from his duties in October 2016, and replaced him with former Manchester United u21 manager Warren Joyce.
After winning only six of his 24 matches at the helm, Joyce was sacked by the club and they were looking for their third manager of the season.
With only a couple of months left to go in the season, the club’s owners decided to appoint Graham Barrow as the interim manager, in hope that he could turn things around and keep the Latics up, but relegation back to League One was confirmed after Wigan lost 1-0 away to Reading on the penultimate weekend of the season.
This week the club have released four players, including experienced goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen.
Following Jaaskelainen’s release, it only leaves the club with one first team goalkeeper in Matt Gilks as other goalkeeper Jakub Haugaard will return to parent club Stoke City when his loan spell ends.
With this in mind Wigan should turn to young Manchester United goalkeeper Joel Castro Pereira.
The 20-year-old goalkeeper, joined Manchester United as a youth team player in 2012, and has since come through the ranks at Old Trafford to make his first-team debut in the FA Cup tie against Wigan in January.
Being third choice at Old Trafford behind David De Gea and Sergio Romero, the Portuguese shot stopper may want to leave the club on loan to get first team football, and with the Latics only having one goalkeeper amongst their first team ranks, Pereira could provide healthy competition for the number one jersey.
