Blackburn Rovers manager Tony Mowbray want to sign Sunderland goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin, according to The Sun journalist Alan Nixon on Twitter.

McLaughlin, who is 32 years old, is out of contract at the Stadium of Light at the end of the season and Blackburn could tempt the Black Cats with a cash offer now, so they will not lose him for nothing in the summer.

So would McLaughlin be a good addition at Ewood Park and is he needed?

We discuss..........

Kris Smith

“Christian Walton is performing very well at the moment for Blackburn and improving by the week, but as he isn’t actually a Rovers player, Tony Mowbray might need to be thinking more long-term.

“Having lost David Raya in the summer, Blackburn replaced him well with Walton on-loan from Brighton, but they will be back to square one in the summer when he returns to the Seagulls, so moving for a ‘keeper now could be a smart move.

“McLaughlin has been a first-team regular at the Stadium of Light this season and rightly so. He has made 21 appearances this season, helping the Black Cats to boast joint-best defensive record in the division so far with 24 goals conceded.

“McLaughlin wouldn’t command as large a fee as some other Championship targets that Mowbray may have, so I think this deal is well worth making this month.”

Phil Spencer

“Jon McLaughlin has been a huge plus for Sunderland in recent weeks.

“Despite a ropey start to the campaign, his form since December has been a joy to behold with his experience inspiring confidence throughout the Black Cats’ team.

“Phil Parkinson will be determined to keep the experienced goalkeeper in the ranks for the promotion push, but it’s hard to stand in his way if a Championship side come knocking.

“Blackburn could be in the market for a new goalkeeper and if they can agree a decent fee for McLaughlin then few could argue that it’s a decent signing.”

Jacob Potter

"I don’t think they need another goalkeeper to be honest.

"Rovers already have Christian Walton available to them this season, and I don’t think he’s done much wrong in this year’s campaign.

"Tony Mowbray’s men also have Jason Leutwiler as their second-choice, and I just think that they should be looking at strengthening other areas of their squad.

"McLaughlin has shown improvement since Sunderland’s recent upturn in form, but I don’t think he’d be an upgrade on what Blackburn currently have.

"Their money would be better off spent elsewhere in more attacking areas of the pitch, as I still think they could benefit from having another attack-minded player in their squad to fill the sizeable void left by Bradley Dack."
