Charlton Athletic have had a solid start to the season under Lee Bowyer despite suffering a heavy 5-3 defeat to Scunthorpe in League One on Tuesday.

Bowyer 41, will be looking for a reaction from his players when they entertain Coventry at The Valley at the weekend prior to the international break.

If though he does not get the improvement he wants, then perhaps Bowyer will look ahead to the transfer market in January for some new players to freshen up his squad and 31-year-old winger Garath McCleary of Reading is a player that Bowyer could consider.

The wideman has struggled with injury at the Madejski, and is seemingly very much of out of the picture in Berkshire, so a loan move in Januay could be an option for him.

So should Charlton make a move for McCleary come January?

We discuss.....

Gary Hutchinson

I’m not so sure this is the move Bowyer needs to look at.

They’re not too bad going forward, are they? They even scored three last night, ending up well beaten.

The issues are further back and I’d like to see them bring in a holding midfielder and certainly more defensive cover.

McCleary would do a job in League One, but I’m not convinced Charlton need him to.

George Dagless

It could be worth it.

McCleary has something to offer but it seems as though Paul Clement is looking elsewhere for the moment.

Charlton have had a decent start and McCleary would boost their smallish squad.

Sam Rourke

This could work.

McCleary has struggled with injuries at the Madejski, and at his age, he needs to find a new platform to enjoy the latter stages of his career.

Charlton could offer him regular game-time and a loan move for him in January would make sense.
