Middlesbrough have had a mixed start to the season, with Jonathan Woodgate's side down in 15th spot in the Championship, following their latest result, a defeat to Cardiff City at the weekend.

This mixed start to the season has prompted Woodgate to look at potential recruits for the January window, with Wolves defender Cameron John a transfer target, a player who is currently plying his trade in League One with Doncaster Rovers, as reported in The Daily Mail.

So would John be a good signing for Boro?

Josh Cole

“This could turn out to be a very shrewd move.

“Currently on loan at Doncaster, the defender has delivered some real signs of promise during the opening weeks of the season in League One.

“As well as helping Rovers secure two clean sheets this year, John has also managed to find the back of the net on two occasions for Darren Moore’s side.

“Considering that the defender is in the final year of his contract, Boro may not have to pay a significant fee to secure his services and thus they must consider making a move.”

Dean Cooke

"At just 20 years of age, John has a long future ahead of him, and with Wolves in the Premier League, it's likely that he'll be given a chance at the club anytime soon.

"He's shown his prowess and will be hoping to have an excellent season for Doncaster where he can have the chance to showcase his ability in League One.

"He has had Premier League interest, alongside Boro's, so I think it would be a good signing, and one to help Middlesbrough's long-term ambitions of a good future under Jonathan Woodgate.

"I'd wait until he had a few more games in League One first before making any big moves for the youngster, but signs are promising."

“This would be an interesting move from Boro in my opinion.

“They already have plenty of centre-backs at the club, with future prospects in Dael Fry and Nathan Wood, so the addition of John would be interesting.

“He’s really impressing on loan at Doncaster and has shown early signs of being able to make the step-up, but it’s too early to say whether he’d do well in the Championship.

“He can also play as a left-back if needs be, though, which would make him a useful option to have in the long run.”
