Reading manager Jose Gomes is continuing his re-building job at the Madejski Stadium, following a campaign that saw the Royals flirt with relegation last season, eventually ending up only seven points clear of the drop zone.

Gomes is looking to strengthen his squad, with AFC Wimbledon striker Joe Pigott a target according to the Daily Mail, after a season that saw the 25-year-old score 18 goals as the Dons managed to retain their League One status.

So would Pigott be a good addition to the Reading squad?

We discuss........

Tommy Joyce

"Pigott has been a really good player in his 18 months at Wimbledon, and it's not a surprise that he's gathering Championship interest.

"It's a bit of a risk buying someone without much experience in this division but he's bagging a lot in League One so for the right money it could be steal.

"With the Daily Mail reporting £250k as the fee, he would be a really good signing at that price.

"He's a very good finisher in the box - bagging 18 times last season - and could help Reading's goal scoring problems."

Kealan Hughes

“This is a surprising move. Prior to last season he has never really scored on a consistent basis in the EFL, although 18 goals last season in a struggling Wimbledon side is impressive.

“Reading were in a relegation battle for much of the season and that was largely due to a lack of goals, so it is an area in need of major improvement.

"Pigott will need to improve considerably if he is to get a similar goal return to last season, and he is reliant of good service for a lot of his goals, so he will need to fit into the way José Manuel Gomes wants to play.

"He is still only 25 however, and with better coaching he could develop into a Championship striker. Considering the fact he will be relatively inexpensive too, it could prove to be an inspired signing."

Jacob Potter

"This could prove to be a smart bit of business, if they land his signature.

"Pigott has already proven that he can score goals for a team that are struggling, having netted 18 times for AFC Wimbledon last season as they retained their League One status.

"The fact that he is available for a fee in the region of £250,000 makes this deal even better for Reading, as they’re struggling financially heading into the new season.

"Any transfers they do make will have to go through the EFL first, and I don’t think they would have an issue with this potential deal, as Pigott isn’t likely to be on high wages compared to some members of the Reading squad.

"He’d be a more affordable option to have for Jose Gomes’ side compared to a striker like Nelson Oliveira, who has also been linked with a permanent switch to the Madejski Stadium."
