Bristol City manager Lee Johnson is reportedly lining up a late move for Chelsea defender Ethan Ampadu, if Frank Lampard's side decide to recall the defender from his loan at RB Leipzig, according to a report by Football Insider.

Since moving to Germany in the summer, the 19-year-old has found first-team football difficult to come by, making just five appearances, that has raised questions over whether Chelsea will recall Ampadu and send him out elsewhere.

So would Ampadu prove a good signing by the Robins and is he actually needed by Johnson's side?

We discuss.........

Dean Cooke

"Ampadu is a player that has a lot of potential, and despite his young age has actually already shown his quality for different senior sides.

"This would be a very good addition for Lee Johnson and his side and would make the departure of Josh Brownhill all the more bearable as they'd have a player coming in who has almost the same kind of quality on the ball just not the experience.

"For Wales, Ampadu has been fantastic and looks mature for his age. He'd be a player that wouldn't look out of place in nay Championship side and if the Robins can get a deal done then it will only help their push for promotion.

"It would be interesting to watch him play regularly and see how he develops, but it would also be interesting to see the talent that he can add to a side such as Bristol City."

“Ampadu has spent the first-half season on-loan at the current Bundesliga leaders Red Bull Leipzig, but hasn’t had much of a run in the team - he’s played just twice in the league this season, with five appearances in total.

“He’ll be gunning for some first-team action then, and it looks like he’ll get it at Bristol City. Lee Johnson’s side look to be on the right track after a tough festive period, and look to be on the verge of some key signings before the window closes tonight - Nahki Wells is set to join from Burnley.

“I think Ampadu would be a great singing. A Welsh international who’s just come from the German leaders, he’ll have learned a lot with Leipzig this season and would fare well in the Championship. He’s a feisty midfielder who’s not afraid to get stuck in, and would add a bit of much needed steel in the Robins’ midfield.

“A player like Ampadu will solve a lot of Bristol’s issues - he’s good going forward and back, and could prove to be the final cog in this Bristol City side. Promotion is very much on the cards for the Robins, and this addition would only better their chances of that.”

Toby Wilding

"I think this could be a useful signing for Bristol City.

"With the loss of Josh Brownhill seemingly imminent, a fresh option in the centre of the park - which Ampadu could offer - may well be needed, while the fact that he can also operate in defence would help the Robins, given they look somewhat short in that position as well.

"Given the fact he has been recruited by a club the size of Chelsea, as well as his international experience that has already seen him reach double figures in terms of senior caps for Wales, there does seem to be a strong belief from more than just one party that Ampadu has plenty of potential to exploit, something Bristol City could now do.

"Indeed, Ampadu himself could well be open to this deal, in order to earn that all-important game time that has yet to really be forthcoming during his club career so far."
