Derby County have been charged by the EFL after recording excessive losses for the three-year period leading up to June 2018.
The Rams have been one of several Championship clubs to have had financial issues with the league in the past, although they thought they had got around it recently after announcing a pre-tax profit when Pride Park was sold to owner Mel Morris for around £80m.
However, the EFL released a statement this evening that confirmed they had charged the Championship side and Derby will fight the case at an independent Disciplinary Commission.
Whilst it must be stressed that this is only a charge, the worst case scenario for the club looks bleak, as Birmingham City were docked nine points last season for their own financial issues and with Phillip Cocu’s side just ten above the relegation zone, that would make it a nervy end to the campaign.
What club did each of these 16 Derby County players sign from?
So, as you would expect, the fans were not best pleased with this update.
Here’s some of the reaction from Twitter…
Hi ho hi ho it’s off to league one we go 😂😢

If this ends badly then I fear Mr Morris will be done as far as the fan base is concerned.

Sorry does it say we're guilty anywhere ? No. The article simply states we've been referred to an independant where they'll find we've broken no rules.

So much for the we will be well within FFP quotes from the club.
Yet still we are offering new contracts to high earning players who have done nothing to deserve them. This club never learns.

Inevitable. Wonder if Mel Morris is still feeling smug.
