Derby's summer business so far has seemingly undercut the lucrative spending of the past few seasons, as they appear to be gradually selling off their best assets.

Many are suggesting that this is down to run ins within FFP laws.

Tom Ince, Will Hughes and most recently Cyrus Christie have all departed the iPro with still nearly a month to go until the new season.

This has left fans (who in previous years have had hopes of automatic promotion) seriously concerned that they may slip back into the routine of mediocrity they endured in their formative years in the league, following their embarrassing relegation from the Premier League back in 2008.

Attacking midfielder Will Hughes, who left for Watford last month,  possessed the flair and drive that created many an opening for a Derby side that have finished in the top 6 in three of the last five seasons.

But there could be a solution for Gary Rowett's men, closer than they think.

Jackson Irvine was pivotal to Burton Albion's survival in an advanced midfield position, scoring an impressive 8 goals in the league.

Offering a similar dynamic to Hughes in regards to his energy across the pitch, Irvine could also help make up for the exit of last season's top scorer, Tom Ince, with his vital goal scoring presence from midfield.

Also of interest is that former Rams and current Burton manager Nigel Clough has admitted that there is a possibility of the Australian international leaving The Pirelli, should the right offer come in.

Irvine arrived at Burton for a cut-price fee last summer, which broke their transfer record.

He may cost Derby a chunk more than that figure, but he could turn out to be a very astute buy.
