Sunderland manager Jack Ross will be preparing his side for the biggest match of his tenure at the Stadium of Light, as he looks to take his side back to the Championship at the first time of asking, via a play-off final against Charlton Athletic at Wembley this weekend.

Ross' cause has received a timely boost after the club website confirmed that veteran winger Aiden McGeady is in contention for the final, having missed the last four matches of the season with a foot injury.

So how big a boost is it for Sunderland that McGeady is available for selection?

We discuss.........

Ben Lang

“This is enormous news for Jack Ross’ side.

“McGeady has been their talisman this season, and it was no coincidence that their form dropped off when he was suffering from injury.

“Sunderland showed their defensive resilience against Portsmouth, and they now just need McGeady’s attacking firepower to inflict damage on Charlton in the final.”

Gary Hutchinson

“I don’t think it is. I think it’s clutching at straws.

“He’s not match fit, he’s clearly struggling and to rush him in could see them with ten-and-a-half men, not 11..

“They’re putting a lot of hope on his shoulders and I personally think it could cost them dearly.”

George Brooks

"This can make all the difference.

"This is without a doubt the biggest game of the season for Sunderland and Jack Ross will want to have as many of his key players fit as possible.

"Not only that, but McGeady has had an outstanding season for the Black Cats, so it will be a massive boost for them if he is fit for the play-off final.

"He scored two goals in the Checkatrade Trophy final against Portsmouth at Wembley in March and he could have a similar role to play against Charlton at the weekend."

Alfie Burns

“It is massive and could make all the difference against Charlton.

“McGeady showed his class at Wembley earlier in the season, and over the course of the campaign, he’s been the shining light for this Sunderland side.

“Having him in the side at Wembley could be a massive lift for the men from the north east.”
