With the news that Alan Hutton may be offered a new contract at Villa Park this summer regardless of which league they will be in, one can only feel that he may end up playing second fiddle if they make it to the Premier League.

The Claret and Blue Army will travel to Wembley this Saturday to face a tough Fulham side in this season's Championship play-off final, with a place in England’s top flight up for grabs.

Slavisa Jokanovic’s side will certainly be going into the fixture as strong favourites after their impressive displays all season, but the old guard at Villa Park could have the experience it takes to see their side through.

No matter what the outcome, nobody can take away from what Steve Bruce side have achieves this season, with what can only be described as a rapidly ageing squad.

Alan Hutton made 32 appearances in all competitions for the Villans this season, and hasn’t looked out of place at all throughout the campaign.

The 33-year-old has had to play on both sides of the defence, but made the left back spot his own in the latter stages of the season.

The veteran full back will be making his 150 appearance for the club at Wembley since he signed for Aston Villa in August 2011.

While time may not be on his side, the Scottish international deserves not only a new contract, but also the starting left back spot if the Claret and Blue Army make it to the Premier League.

While the pace of the game has changed since Hutton was last in England’s top flight, his knowledge and experience is second to none in his positon. And, with two assists to his name this season, who says he can’t still bomb down the flanks.

Whether the season ends on a promotion high for the Villa faithful or not, one thing they can do is hope that Alan Hutton is still at the club next season.

Already having been linked with a number of left backs, including Bristol City’s Joe Bryan, it may be time up on Hutton’s spot in the starting eleven.

But, Steve Bruce should consider keeping the veteran around for a little bit longer.
