2016/17 was a memorable season in Burton Albion's history, as the club defied all odds and survived in the second tier.

Burton, who were playing non-league football less than 10 years ago, finished in 20th place in the Championship table, securing safety with a game to spare after a 1-1 draw at Barnsley.

Brewers boss Nigel Clough still has an enormous task on his hands though in ensuring Burton don't suffer 'second season syndrome' and slip back down the leagues.

Unlike some of their fellow Championship clubs, the budget is tight at the Pirelli Stadium, and therefore Burton can't compete with the big boys financially.

Clough took great advantage of the free market and loan market last season, bringing in players Lloyd Dyer, Marvin Sordell and Cauley Woodrow, and the Burton manager will more than likely have to do the same again this season.

One player who could be a great addition to the Burton Albion side is centre back Jake Buxton, who is valued at £638k by Transfermarkt.com.

The 32-year-old is available on a free transfer following his release by Wigan - by mutual consent so he could live closer to his family, who reside in Nottinghamshire -  and a move to the Pirelli would form a reunion with both his former club and former manager.

Buxton helped Burton win promotion to the Football League in 2009 and that summer he joined Derby County, then managed by Clough, who had previously been at the helm at Burton before taking the Derby job during the 2008/09 season.

The defender would bring great experience to the Burton back line as he spent seven seasons in the Championship with Derby, making 139 league outings for the Rams.

The centre-back is also a no-nonsense defender that puts his body on the line when defending, and that's the kind of player you need when you're fighting for your lives at the bottom end of the division.

Barring the Brewers upsetting the odds, it's likely they will looking to ensure Championship survival once again so they can establish themselves as a second tier club.

Chief Clough will need his players to work hard and give absolutely everything for the team, since surviving in the Championship when you're a club of Burton's size is a mightily tough - Buxton fits the bill perfectly.
