Birmingham City managed to stay in the Championship this season by just 2 points, thanks to two straight victories over Huddersfield Town and Bristol City in their final two games.

Following a terrific start to the season under Gary Rowett, the new owners decided that they wanted a new outlook on the first team and parted company with the highly popular manager, and brought in Gianfranco Zola to replace him.

After signing a two-and-a-half-year deal, Zola lasted just four months in the job, as following a defeat to Burton Albion he resigned from his post, with a record of 2 wins in 24 games.

Following the departure of Zola, the Birmingham board acted swiftly to appoint Harry Redknapp and with 2 wins in 3 games he managed to guide Birmingham to Championship safety, and following the end of the season, he signed a one-year deal to stay on as manager.

Redknapp will already be looking at players that he needs to bring in to bolster his squad, ahead of the summer transfer window. While his standing in the game will likely prove attractive to potential signings, those in the Second City would surely be better served in making astute additions this summer.

One area in particular that he will need to strengthen is in front of goal, as the Blues only managed to find the back of the net on 45 occasions this season.

One player who Birmingham and Redknapp should turn to over the course of this summer, is Plymouth Argyle attacking midfielder Graham Carey.

This season, he has been an outstanding the Pilgrims. After finding the back of the net on 15 occasions and assisting 16 times, his contribution helped the Devonshire outfit to promotion to League One, though surely his performances will not have gone unnoticed to the wider Football League.

With this record it shows that not only can Carey chip in with goals, he can also provide for his teammates, which could prove to be crucial in helping Birmingham push up the table next campaign.

Rated at just £340k on Transfermarktthe 28-year-old would be a wonderful addition indeed.
