Some of Gary Rowett’s work during the summer transfer window has been excellent, with the Derby County manager improving his playing squad ahead of a push for promotion.

Despite starting the season as one of the favourites for the Sky Bet Championship’s top-six, Derby could not overcome Sunderland on Friday evening, as the Rams were left frustrated by a 1-1 draw.

There were plenty of positives for Rowett to take away, particularly how solid his side looked in defence with Curtis Davies and Richard Keogh, whilst Tom Huddlestone did an excellent job of shielding the duo.

However, Derby lacked a real cutting edge in attack, and clearly missed Will Hughes and Tom Ince, who were both sold earlier this summer.

Here at FLW, one player we believe Derby should look to sign between now and the end of summer is Josh Morris from Scunthorpe United, who could potentially solve their attacking problem.

The 25-year-old was exceptional for Scunthorpe in League One last season, scoring 19 goals and adding 17 assists, as he helped his side reach the play-offs.

Morris’ stats last season were breathtaking - as were his performances – and there is a real surprise that there is not more Championship interest in the talented midfielder.

Derby will still be in the mix for the play-offs come the end of the season, but Rowett’s squad is lacking in certain departments and the addition of a player like Morris would be a real coup for the Rams.

Friday’s draw with Sunderland was encouraging, particularly the performance of Rowett’s defence, but supporters will have been worried by the lack of attacking threat shown by the Rams, which is something that must change in the coming weeks.
