Charlton Athletic have secured promotion to the Championship after Patrick Bauer's late strike handed the Addicks a last-ditch victory against Sunderland at Wembley yesterday.

Sunderland had been gifted an early lead after Charlton goalkeeper Dillon Phillips failed to control Naby Sarr's back pass, but Ben Purrington then levelled the scores for Lee Bowyer's side before Bauer struck at the death.

The victory means Charlton have now ended their three-year stint in the third tier, while Sunderland failed to reach their aim of achieving League One promotion at the first attempt.

Bowyer was appointed permanent Charlton manager in March last year, which means he has been able to achieve promotion in his first season in management.

The Charlton Twitter page shared a video of Bowyer addressing his players in the dressing room after this feat was achieved:

The 42-year-old delivered an impassioned speech where he told the players of his pride, while reminded the Charlton squad that they will go down in history for their achievements.

Plenty of fans responded to Bowyer's message in delight at the club's success, while expressing appreciation for their manager.
