Bolton Wanderers defender David Wheater received his marching orders this weekend on a dismal afternoon for the club.

Bolton are currently in crisis, struggling to make ends meet and ripe for a takeover, but on the field things are also going from bad to worse.

The 32-year-old was sent off after 73 minutes of their clash with Swansea, the second Trotter to receive his marching orders. Two swift goals followed, condemning them to a damaging defeat.

They're now seven points from safety with 11 games left to play and assuming they complete their fixtures and live to fight another day, it will most likely be as a League One club.

Wheater has

/BuoiT81HFr0/?hl=en">recently used Instagram to post a photo of himself trudging off a rain-swept Liberty Stadium pitch with the quote 'It's a funny old game'. It's a rather poignant and relevant image, given the storm around the club at present.

That's brought Bolton fans out in their droves, perhaps fuelled by the furore around the ownership, perhaps a little in support of Wheater who always gives 100% for the cause.

Here's a selection of their responses from Instagram...

thematthewpryor: "All the fans will chip in a fiver if you two-foot lunge Ken. Maybe even a tenner"

wesleybwfc: "You might be the last ever red card recipient in the history of Bolton Wanderers"

oli_rafferty_16: "Keep going Wheats. I’m sure things will sort themselves out in time. "

nikolamore: "It's disgusting what's going on at our club, the sooner the Anderson's are gone the better. Us fans are all behind you 110%"

mikebwfc: "BWFC4EVA mate...hard times but we will rise like the phoenix from the flames. Keep up the good work on the pitch"
