Middlesbrough are currently preparing to face Leeds United on Wednesday night and could be boosted by a potential injury to the Whites’ star midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

While the Teessiders have problems in the medical room of their own to worry about, they could be facing a Leeds side with a huge weakness on Wednesday night at the Riverside as they sweat on the fitness of Kalvin Phillips.

The 23-year-old has been an integral part to Marcelo Bielsa’s side this season and proved it in the last three games after coming back from his suspension, however, he was dealt with what appears to be a minor injury setback as he hobbled off in the 1-0 victory over Reading at the weekend.

With Phillips off for Gjanni Alioski, Leeds look less balanced without their talisman and there are question marks over his fitness ahead of a crunch match on Teesside, massively affecting both ends of the table.

While Phillips played down the injury on his Instagram post after the game, it will still be a quick turnaround for the holding midfielder as the midweek fixtures roll around.

A ‘dead calf’ could take time for him to recover from and he might need to sit out at the weekend, which could play a bit more into Jonathan Woodgate’s hands.

The times haven’t been great at the moment in the North East as they slip further and further towards the relegation zone following a torrid run. Their last result was a very poor performance against bottom club Barnsley where they came out 1-0 losers and now sit just three points above the drop zone.

Fans aren’t optimistic of a result against the Whites given the turn in form of both sides, especially after their meeting at Elland Road in late November.

News of Phillips’ injury would be a big boost to Boro’s chances but their fans are still looking for a miracle...
