In each of the last two seasons Sheffield Wednesday have fallen through the play-off hurdles, and boss Carlos Carvalhal will want to avoid having to navigate the difficult play-off journey by securing a place in the Championship top two to secure an automatic return to the Premier League.

Carvalhal has assembled one of the strongest squads in the division, and will hope it is third time lucky as the Owls strive to secure a spot in the world’s premier domestic league.

One many Carvalhal may have to continue his journey without however is defender Jose Semedo, with the Portuguese failing to return the calls of his manager and team-mates this summer, having been released from the club when his contract expired last month.

Carvalhal had been keen to discuss new terms with the 32-year-old, but it appears Semedo will seek another move this summer as he perhaps attempts to gain a big final pay day as he enters the latter stages of his career.

The alternative is that Semedo just wants to cram as much football into the final few years of his career as possible, with his opportunities rather limited at Hillsborough over the last few seasons.

Semedo has been extremely loyal to the Owls since linking up with the club in 2011, and may feel that now is the right time to seek a fresh challenge after such a long spell in South Yorkshire.

Those associated with Wednesday would love to see the player back in Carvalhal’s squad, and promotion with the Owls would be an excellent way to sign off his time with the club.

Whether Semedo is ignoring his old boss’ calls or whether he has just changed numbers, only time will tell if he returns to Hillsborough this summer, or begins a new chapter of his career with another club.

How much would you like Semedo back at Hillsborough, Owls fans?
