Aston Villa manager Dean Smith is interested in Newcastle United midfielder Isaac Hayden, with the 23-year-old keen to get out of St James’ Park for personal reasons, despite manager Rafael Benitez’s high opinion of the player, according to a report in The Mirror.
Smith needs to bolster his midfield options, if his Villa side are going to mount an effective promotion challenge over the second half of the season.
So should Villa go all out to sign Hayden?
“He brings energy in midfield and has plenty to offer but he’s not really getting his chance at the moment.
“He’d be hungry to prove himself and Villa need some extra mobility so why not have a look?”
“I’m not sure anyone should go ‘all out’ for anyone.
“Transfers done in that way lead to errors.
“They shouldn’t break the bank for him, but he’s got to be worth £5m of anyone’s money.
“If he came in, would it spell the end in the summer for Grealish?”
“They should, but if Jamal Lascelles is out for a prolonged period with the hamstring injury that he pulled up with in the FA Cup replay against Blackburn last night, he might now be going anywhere.
“Despite not featuring too much for Newcastle, he has been in and around the first-team all season.
“A move could be on the cards depending on how Lascelles is after being forced off.
“But it remains to be seen if there is any movement in this rumour.”
