Aston Villa could be set to move for Romaine Sawyers in the January transfer window, with Dean Smith seemingly keen to reunite with the midfielder at Villa Park.

According to Football Insider, Smith wants to add Sawyers to his options in the centre of midfield, with the 27-year-old bringing both energy and creativity to the area.

Sawyers has made 20 appearances for Brentford this season, recording two assists in that time.

Is he what Aston Villa need next month, though?

We discuss…

George Harbey

There is no doubt that Sawyers is a superb player and would be fantastic in behind the strikers.

He’s a player that Smith knows inside and out from his time at Walsall and Brentford, and he definitely knows how to get the best out of him.

Where does he fit in with Jack Grealish and John McGinn, though?

Chris Gallagher

I don't think they need him.

Jack Grealish is the number 10 at the club, and if fit, he will play all the time.

Therefore, Sawyers will be a sub, but they should let Callum O'Hare develop in that role, as he could make a big impact if given a chance.

Alfie Burns

He’s not what Aston Villa need at all.

Going forwards, Smith’s side are superb, with their problems coming at the other end of the field.

A goalkeeper, centre-back and left-back have to be a priority.
