Sunderland may have new owners by the end of the week as Mark Campbell's takeover nears completion, as reported by the Sunderland Echo.

The businessman is set to take a majority share in the club, with Stewart Donald, Juan Sartori and Charlie Methven retaining small stakes, but not the controlling interest.

Former Eastleigh boss Donald took over at the Stadium of Light after they tumbled out of the Championship. Under his watchful eye, they rid themselves of high-earners such as Lamine Kone and Didier Ndong.

However, on the field they did not achieve their ultimate goal of promotion, losing out in the play-off final to Charlton Atheltic despite being gifted an early goal. They beat Portsmouth over two legs in the semi-final, but couldn't get the better of Pompey at Wembley for the EFL Trophy.

It's certainly an interesting time to be a Sunderland fan, but should news of the takeover coming to a close be received warmly by their fans? How should Black Cats' fans be feeling right now?

Our panel of Football League experts discuss.

George Harbey

"It’s a mixed one for me.

"A takeover is always quite risky in my opinion, but this one looks to be like it’s been done with real precaution and carefulness.

"Stewart Donald is a decent bloke, and he’s really lifted the spirits at the Stadium of Light, and some will be sad to see him hand over the keys so to speak.

"But, if he can’t keep it up financially, then that’s fair enough."

Jacob Potter

"They should be excited.

"Sunderland are a club that have struggled in recent years, and the feel-good factor at the Stadium of Light has disappeared completely after some poor seasons.

"But this could be a welcome boost, and I think that if funds are made available, then they'll almost certainly win promotion to the Championship next season.

"The sooner this is completed, the better - So they can make new additions to their squad to mount their challenge for promotion."

Gary Hutchinson

"It's a new dawn for the supporters.

"The hope will be that the new man brings not only success, but the resources to kick on.

"In fairness to Donald, they did spend well last season but it didn't pay off.

"Perhaps with a new direction, it might be a tough few months for Jack Ross, who was to blame for their unadventurous approach in the play-offs."
