Frank Lampard could be set for a reunion with another former Chelsea teammate, after it was reported that the Derby manager will look to bring Gary Cahill to Pride Park if The Rams are promoted to the Premier League.

After making 290 appearances in all competitions during a seven year spell at Chelsea, Cahill is now set to leave Stamford Bridge when his contract expires at the end of the season, although the 33-year-old has no plans to retire just yet.

According to The Mirror, Lampard could look to take advantage of that by attempting to sign Cahill for Derby next season, although that would depend on The Rams beating Aston Villa in the Championship play-off final on the 27th May, as they would be unlikely to be able to afford Cahill's wages in the second tier.

Cahill wouldn't be the first former teammate of Lampard's that the Derby boss has brought to Pride Park, with Ashley Cole having joined from MLS side LA Galaxy in January.

So, would Cahill be a good signing for Derby?

We asked some of our Football League World writers for their opinion...

George Brooks

"This would be a good signing for Derby - although they may struggle to afford his wages if they fail to win promotion to the Premier League.

"He's still a very good defender and much like Ashley Cole, would be able to pass his experience down to the younger players in the squad.

"He would be a big influence both on the pitch and in the dressing room.

"He also knows Frank Lampard very well from their time together at Chelsea, so the move makes perfect sense."

Toby Wilding

"This could be a smart signing for Derby.

"Cahill probably wouldn't be a regular starter for Derby, but his experience and insight could be important for the younger members of The Rams squad, particularly in defence.

"He could also be a useful asset to bring on and close out games for Derby next season, something they may need to do frequently if they are promoted to the Premier League."

Jacob Potter

"They really don't need him.

"There's no doubting that his experience might be useful, but Derby need to be planning for the future, and with Cahill's age, it just doesn't fit what they need.

"There are far better options out there for the Rams, especially if they are to win promotion back to the Premier League this season."
